Thomas Mullen's THE LAST TOWN ON EARTH

There are moments where the tension takes on a life of its own; it curls up inside your mind, scraping ill-groomed fingernails up and down your autonomic nervous system--unfortunately, the climax of these moments never lives up to the hype.
Was everyone in this town experiencing some form of dissociative fugue?
I don't care how sick the tosser was, he should have visited Elsie. There is no excuse for that behaviour and, frankly, that moment is almost solely responsible for dropping this novel from "great" to "solid.
